Brent crossed $100\. PPI came in at 5.4% — CPI drops this morning at 8:30\. Trump promised $5,000 to every adult American at the GOP convention — and Fetterman showed up to endorse a Republican. Tomorrow is 25 years since 9/11\. And tonight: Shelton vs. Tiafoe.

A dense Thursday. Brent crossed $100 for the first time since July after the latest Iran escalation. This morning's PPI came in at 5.4% year-over-year — the CPI drops in hours. Trump in Dallas promised every American $5,000 if the GOP holds Congress, warned Iran about Pickaxe Mountain, and watched John Fetterman appear in a video at the RNC convention. Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of September 11\. And tonight at Arthur Ashe: one American man is guaranteed in Sunday's final. Let's get into it.

Brent crude crossed $100 for the first time since July — and the PPI report this morning confirmed inflation is still running hot heading into today's CPI.

The global oil benchmark crossed $100 a barrel Wednesday for the first time in two months, driven by the U.S. destruction of five Iranian tankers Tuesday and fresh Houthi attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities near Abha. Trading Economics recorded Brent at approximately $100.76 Wednesday, steadying near $101 Thursday morning as Iran vowed it was "prepared for a more intense war" and has no intention of backing down from the U.S. naval blockade. The last time Brent traded above $100 was in July, when the Islamabad memorandum of understanding broke down. This morning the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the August Producer Price Index — the wholesale inflation number that tracks what businesses pay before costs get passed to consumers. PPI came in at +0.4% for the month, in line with consensus. But the year-over-year number told the real story: PPI is running at 5.4%, well above the Fed's 2% inflation target and 0.1 percentage point higher than expected. Core PPI accelerated 0.2%. Stock market futures were negative following the report.

"PPI matters because it's a leading indicator for CPI — what producers pay today tends to become what consumers pay in the months ahead. A PPI running at 5.4% while oil crosses $100 is not a picture that argues for the Fed to hold rates steady." — Dark Bulls

The August CPI report drops this morning at 8:30 a.m. ET — the last major inflation data before the September 15-16 FOMC meeting. September rate hike odds are above 65%. Gasoline was already at a Labor Day record of $4.15 nationally; diesel is at record levels above the price of crude itself. Today's CPI will show whether August captured the early stages of this energy-driven surge, or whether the bigger numbers are still ahead.

Trump promised $5,000 to every adult American at the GOP convention — and Fetterman showed up to endorse a Republican.

President Trump capped Wednesday's opening night of the Republican midterm convention in Dallas by making what may be the boldest political promise of the year: a $5,000 "Trump Dividend" payment to every adult American if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress after November 3\. The proposal, which could cost at least $1 trillion and whose funding mechanism Trump did not specify, is financially implausible by any conventional analysis. But it reflected his apparent calculation that he needs bold moves to revive Republicans' chances as Democrats try to take advantage of his low approval ratings in tight races across the country. The nearly two-hour speech at American Airlines Center in Dallas strongly defended the Iran war and predicted victory — while suggesting the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed after him. He warned Iran about Pickaxe Mountain, a known site for nuclear centrifuge assembly: "I would advise Iran not to get cute because we will have to hit them very hard." He also revealed he struck Iran despite reservations from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent: "A couple of them, including Scott, said, 'Sir, is there any time we could do it later?' I said no, because if we don't hit them now, they're going to have a nuclear weapon within one month."

"Yes, I'm a Democrat. Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I'm a common-sense Democrat. I'm always going to stand with America." — Sen. John Fetterman, at the Republican midterm convention, Dallas — Democratic Senator at GOP convention

The evening's most unexpected moment came before Trump took the stage: Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania appeared in a prerecorded video to introduce Republican Senator Dave McCormick, drawing enormous cheers from the Pennsylvania delegation. Fetterman has repeatedly said he has no plans to switch parties, but his appearance at a Republican convention — endorsing a GOP candidate for reelection — is the kind of move that makes that claim harder to sustain. Democrats called it "political mutiny." House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Fetterman's "courage." Night Two of the convention continues today with Ted Cruz and other Republican speakers; Trump and Vance are both scheduled to close it out.

Tomorrow marks 25 years since September 11, 2001 — the ceremony, the Tribute in Light, and what to expect.

The 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks falls tomorrow, and New York City, Washington, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania will observe it with the ceremonies that have defined each anniversary since 2002 — but with the added weight of a quarter-century milestone. At the National September 11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan, families of victims will gather for a private morning ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m. The first moment of silence is at 8:46 a.m. — the time American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower. Five additional moments of silence will follow, marking the second impact, both tower collapses, the Pentagon attack, and the crash of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. A seventh moment of silence will honor those who have died since from 9/11-related illnesses. The ceremony at Ground Zero has barred political speeches since 2012\. Former President Biden and several other former presidents are scheduled to attend at the Memorial plaza. President Trump will speak at the Pentagon — a deliberate distinction that reflects both the policy and the politics of the anniversary. Trump proclaimed tomorrow Patriot Day 2026, calling upon all federal agencies to fly flags at half-staff.

"On the anniversary of 9/11, the families of victims will gather for a ceremony on the 9/11 Memorial plaza to read aloud the names of the 2,983 men, women, and children killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks and February 26, 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center." — National September 11 Memorial & Museum

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation will carry a steel beam cut from the wreckage of the World Trade Center's South Tower through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel on foot tonight — retracing the path of firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran that tunnel on the morning of September 11, 2001, equipment on his back, and gave his life trying to reach the towers. The Tribute in Light — two columns of blue-white light that rise above Lower Manhattan each year — illuminates the sky tonight and tomorrow night. The twin beams are visible for more than 60 miles on a clear night and have become, over 25 years, the most recognized symbol of the city's remembrance.

Producer prices are running at 5.4% year-over-year — here's what that means for your grocery bill, your retirement, and the months ahead.

This morning's PPI report showing 5.4% year-over-year wholesale inflation is not abstract. It is the number that tells you what the store shelves and restaurant menus will look like in three to six months, because producer prices lead consumer prices with a lag. When businesses pay more for inputs — energy, materials, transportation — those costs flow through to the consumer. The August PPI came in at +0.4% for the month, the third consecutive monthly increase, at a time when oil has crossed $100 a barrel. For people over 50 managing fixed or semi-fixed incomes, the practical concern is that inflation at these levels erodes purchasing power faster than most investment accounts are growing. Social Security's cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 will be calculated based on CPI data from this summer and fall — those numbers are being set in real time by the energy and food price environment of the Iran war and its Gulf disruptions. A higher COLA sounds like good news, but it signals that the inflation eating into savings has already been significant enough to trigger the adjustment mechanism.

"Congress went Roth crazy. Why? Because they need the revenue. They get the money upfront." — Ed Slott, America's top retirement CPA, on SECURE 2.0 and the broader shift in retirement tax law. — CPA Ed Slott on SECURE 2.0

The Federal Reserve's rate decision on September 16 matters directly for anyone carrying variable-rate debt. A 25-basis-point hike adds roughly $25-50 per month on a $200,000 variable balance. More consequentially, higher rates for longer reshape the math on bonds, CDs, and fixed-income allocations that form the backbone of most retirement portfolios. A 5-year Treasury yielding 4.4% is genuinely competitive with equity returns for the first time in years. The SECURE 2.0 rule changes to Roth contributions, combined with 5.4% wholesale inflation and rising rates, mean anyone over 50 navigating retirement accounts should revisit the math on their allocation before the Fed meets next week.

A massive rule change quietly hit American retirement accounts… And Wall Street experts are calling it a blatant government cash grab. Congress realized waiting decades to tax retirement savings is no longer an option… So a mandate was passed forcing millions of Americans to pay taxes upfront. America's top CPA Ed Slott put it bluntly: "Congress went Roth crazy. Why? Because they need the revenue. They get the money upfront." For individuals over 50 trying to max out a 401(k) or IRA… this law could significantly cut into hard-earned nest eggs.

The all-American US Open men's semifinal is tonight — Shelton versus Tiafoe — and for the first time since 2003, one of them will be in Sunday's final.

Ben Shelton has had approximately 36 hours to sleep after winning the greatest match of his career at 3:33 a.m. Wednesday morning. Frances Tiafoe, who finished his own five-set comeback victory over Alex Michelsen at roughly midnight, has had a bit more rest. Neither will need much motivation tonight at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where two Americans will play the US Open men's semifinal — and where one of them will advance to Sunday's final, guaranteeing the end of American tennis's 23-year Grand Slam title drought that dates to Andy Roddick's US Open win in 2003. The match-up is stylistically fascinating. Shelton is the bigger server — he hit 146 mph aces to close out Alcaraz at 3 a.m. — and plays an aggressive, first-strike game. Tiafoe is more versatile, better in extended rallies, and demonstrated against Michelsen that he can grind through adversity. Shelton leads their head-to-head 3-2, but Tiafoe has beaten him on hard courts before and knows his game better than almost anyone.

"For the first time since 1975, all four top seeds in the women's draw are in the US Open semifinals. Sabalenka vs. Pegula. Gauff vs. Rybakina. Tonight's tennis is genuinely historic on both sides of the draw." — Dark Bulls

The women's semifinals are also today. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka faces No. 3 Jessica Pegula in a rematch of the 2024 US Open final, which Sabalenka won. In the other semi, No. 4 Coco Gauff — who saved two match points to survive Andreeva — faces No. 2 Elena Rybakina. For the first time since 1975, all four top seeds in the women's draw are in the semifinals. The women's final is Saturday. The men's final is Sunday. Tonight at Arthur Ashe, history is on both sides of the draw.

📋 In Brief

CPI at 8:30 a.m. ET this morning. The August Consumer Price Index drops this morning — the last major inflation data before the September 15-16 FOMC decision. Expectations: headline CPI around 3.3-3.5% year-over-year, core CPI around 2.5%. With PPI at 5.4% and Brent above $100, any upside surprise locks in a September hike almost certainly. We'll cover the result in tomorrow's issue. 9/11 ceremony logistics. The Memorial plaza opens to the public in the afternoon following the private morning ceremony. The Tribute in Light begins at dusk and runs until dawn — visible for more than 60 miles on a clear night. Significant transportation restrictions will be in effect around the World Trade Center site. The FDNY's 25th anniversary ceremony is a private event for families. RNC Night Two today. The GOP midterm convention continues today in Dallas with Ted Cruz, NRCC chair Richard Hudson, and others. Trump and Vice President Vance are both scheduled to close out tonight's proceedings. The convention wraps up today; the midterm campaign proper begins tomorrow — eight weeks before November 3.
