The White House rejected Iran's Hormuz proposal and Brent jumped back above $98\. Five British nationals were arrested near RAF Fairford — the base used to bomb Iran. A Nor'easter is battering the East Coast. Pope Leo XIV prayed inside Notre Dame for the first time since the 2019 fire. And Judge Sullivan is moving toward formal contempt against AG Blanche.

Monday. The diplomatic window that opened last week slammed shut over the weekend. The White House called Iran's Hormuz proposal "not good enough" and oil reversed five sessions of gains in a single day. In Britain, five men were arrested near the American air base used to bomb Iran — counterterrorism officials describe it as one of the most significant plots in years. A major storm is hitting the East Coast. And the Epstein contempt case against the attorney general moved to its next phase. Let's get into it.

The White House rejected Iran's seven-day Hormuz proposal over the weekend, with a senior administration official telling reporters the terms were "not good enough" and that the offer did not meet the conditions Washington has set for easing its naval blockade of Iranian ports. The rejection reversed five sessions of oil market relief in a single trading day Monday: Brent crude jumped back above $98 from last week's low near $94, erasing more than half of the diplomatic week's gains. The speed of the reversal reflects how entirely the oil price has been tracking the Iran diplomatic track — not fundamentals, not supply, not demand. Every headline from UNGA moved crude, and the White House rejection moved it back.

The administration's objection centers on the sequencing of Iran's proposal. Tehran wants the U.S. to begin lifting port blockade measures before Hormuz reopens. Washington wants Hormuz open first, then discussions on blockade relief. That gap — which end of the exchange happens first — is the core of the standoff, and it has not moved. Energy Secretary Chris Wright's claim that Hormuz is already flowing at near-normal levels (which independent analysts dispute) gives the administration political cover to hold the line: if the blockade is already failing, why accept a proposal that requires giving something up to get the strait open? The Hormuz proposal is not dead, but it is stalled. Brent is pricing the stall.

"

They made a proposal, and it's a significant proposal. It's a significant step. It's not good enough.

— White House official on Iran's Hormuz proposal, September 27, 2026

For American households, the rejection means the gas price relief that began last week is on pause. National average gas had fallen to $4.12 Friday; by Monday morning it was tracking back toward $4.20 as crude reversed. The potential path to sub-$4 gas before October, which looked plausible Thursday, now depends on a diplomatic breakthrough that the White House just declined. Midterms are six weeks away. Energy prices remain the single largest driver of consumer sentiment. The administration's calculation — that it can hold the line on Hormuz without paying a political price — will be tested at every gas station in America between now and November 3.

A dollar reset on this scale has happened just once before in our 250-year history. That was back in 1974, with a secret deal struck in a Saudi desert that quietly determined the financial fate of an entire generation of Americans. Five British nationals were arrested near RAF Fairford — the U.S. Air Force base used to bomb Iran — on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses, in what counterterrorism officials called one of the most significant plots in years.

British counterterrorism police arrested five men from London early Monday near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire — the U.S. Air Force's only dedicated forward operating location for heavy bombers in Europe, and the base from which B-1B Lancers and B-52H Stratofortresses flew missions against Iran. Three suspicious vehicles were observed moving toward the base perimeter before dawn, triggering an emergency response. Dozens of homes in the surrounding Cotswolds area were evacuated and a large armed police presence was deployed. The men, all British nationals, were arrested on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses. Police have not disclosed their ethnic or religious backgrounds or any alleged connection to Iran.

The IRGC declared RAF Fairford a "legitimate target" in July, after B-1 bombers departed the base for strikes on Iranian territory. MI5 chief Ken McCallum said last year that since 2022 his agency had responded to 20 Iran-backed plots posing lethal threats to British citizens and residents. Whether this arrest is connected to Iran or represents a domestic terrorism plot is not yet known — counterterrorism officials cited "operational concerns" for not disclosing details of the suspected offenses. But the timing — one week after Iran's Hormuz proposal was rejected — and the target — the base directly associated with bombing Iran — will focus attention on the IRGC's stated threat to retaliate against British infrastructure.

Separately, DHS announced an ICE surge for October — expanded enforcement operations in sanctuary cities, with the department citing elevated threat levels connected to the Iran war and unauthorized border crossings. The White House also moved to block CNN from covering the president's schedule this week, a day after Judge Kelly's temporary restraining order from last Wednesday — the one that had restored CNN's access — expired without the court extending it. CNN filed for an emergency extension Monday morning. The legal fight over White House press access is now in its third week with no resolution.

A Nor'easter moved up the Eastern Seaboard Monday bringing sustained heavy rain, coastal flooding, and wind gusts that prompted travel advisories from Virginia to Maine. The storm is the first significant weather event to hit the densely populated Northeast corridor since summer, arriving at the start of the work week and disrupting morning commutes across multiple major cities. Flash flood warnings are in effect for low-lying areas of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. Amtrak suspended service on several Northeast Corridor routes through the afternoon.

Hawaii is beginning damage assessments after Hurricane Nolo made its closest approach to the Big Island and Kauai over the weekend. The storm delivered 18-22 inches of rain to parts of the Big Island and Kauai, below the worst-case 30-inch forecast but still causing significant flooding, road closures, and structural damage in low-lying communities. No fatalities have been reported. Governor Josh Green said the state will request a federal disaster declaration. The damage comes just six months after the March flooding event that cost the state more than $1 billion — Hawaii's second catastrophic weather event of 2026.

South Korea summoned Ukraine's acting ambassador Monday to protest Kyiv's disclosure that captured North Korean soldiers had been transferred to Seoul — a matter Seoul says was covered by a confidentiality agreement Ukraine denies existed.

— Reuters, September 28, 2026

South Korea summoned Ukraine's acting ambassador Monday to protest the public disclosure by Ukrainian President Zelensky — made from the UNGA podium last week — that captured North Korean soldiers had been transferred to South Korean custody. Seoul says the transfer was covered by a confidentiality agreement; Ukraine's presidential office denied such an agreement existed. The diplomatic dispute adds friction to an already complicated relationship between two countries that share a common adversary in Russia and North Korea. Separately, multiple mass shootings in South Africa over the weekend left at least 18 dead across two separate incidents in Gauteng province.

Pope Leo XIV walked into Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris for the first time since the 2019 fire — leading vespers inside the restored Gothic nave seven years after the world watched it burn.

Pope Leo XIV became the first pope to enter Notre Dame Cathedral since the devastating April 2019 fire that destroyed the spire and much of the roof of the 856-year-old Gothic church. The pope led vespers prayers inside the restored nave on Friday evening, September 25, as part of a four-day apostolic journey to France. He called on French Catholics to be "living stones" of a Church that bears witness to how God's love restores and heals humanity. The cathedral reopened to the public in December 2024 after five years of reconstruction — an effort that involved more than 2,000 craftspeople, 250,000 donors from 150 countries, and approximately €700 million in contributions. For the millions of people who watched the April 2019 fire in real time, Leo's appearance inside the restored building carried a significance beyond the liturgical.

The image of a pope praying inside Notre Dame — seven years after the world feared the cathedral was lost — carries particular resonance for older Americans who have watched institutions they grew up with erode or disappear. Notre Dame's restoration was one of the genuinely good news stories of the past half-decade: something broken, rebuilt. Leo XIV, the first American-born pope in history, led the prayers in French — a gesture that drew widespread appreciation from French Catholics who have seen their church attendance decline sharply over the past generation. The moment was broadcast live across Europe.

DHS announced Monday an ICE surge for October, with expanded enforcement operations planned in major cities. The announcement came alongside a separate report that the administration has been using taxpayer-funded media buys to run ads promoting the president's policy agenda — a practice that watchdog groups say crosses the line between government information and political advertising. Several House Democrats have requested GAO review of the ad spending. For older Americans whose media consumption is heavily weighted toward local television — where many of these ads are running — the line between news and government promotion is increasingly blurred.

Judge Sullivan set a contempt hearing date for AG Blanche over the Epstein files — moving the case toward a formal finding that would be the first against a sitting U.S. attorney general in modern history.

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan set a hearing date for the contempt proceeding against Attorney General Todd Blanche in the Epstein files case — moving the matter past the initiation phase and into the formal process that could result in a contempt finding. Blanche missed the September 24 deadline to produce FBI agents' handwritten notes from Epstein-related interviews, submitted a response the Justice Department claimed constituted full compliance, and had that claim rejected by journalist Katie Phang's legal team, which said the handwritten notes remain unproduced. Sullivan has already referred Blanche to a bar grievance committee and ruled that he "failed to comply" with court orders.

A formal contempt finding against a sitting attorney general would have no modern precedent. The tools available to Sullivan if he finds Blanche in contempt include daily fines (Phang's team has requested $1,000 per day), appointment of a special master to manage document review, and — in extreme cases — referral to Congress for impeachment proceedings. None of these options have been exercised against an attorney general in recent memory. The Justice Department has indicated it plans to appeal any adverse ruling, which could move the case to the D.C. Circuit and potentially the Supreme Court before any documents are produced.

"

Blanche — who was the president's personal defense attorney before becoming attorney general — is being asked to produce documents that may implicate his former client. He has chosen non-compliance at every step.

— Dark Bulls

The political geometry remains as constrained as ever. The contempt hearing will require Blanche or his representatives to appear before Sullivan and explain why the handwritten notes — which are not classified, which the Epstein Files Transparency Act requires to be released, and which the Justice Department has never denied exist — remain unproduced. Every answer Blanche can give either exposes the president or exposes the attorney general to a worse judicial response. The hearing date has not yet been made public. It will be.

📋 In Brief

Iran: what comes next.

The seven-day Hormuz proposal was rejected. Both sides still have mediators active. Qatar and Oman are the primary back-channels. The next diplomatic signal could come this week — or the war could enter a new escalation phase. Oil will price either outcome immediately.

RAF Fairford: investigation ongoing.

Five British nationals are in custody. Whether they have connections to Iran, to domestic extremism, or to another group is under investigation. Counterterrorism officials cited "operational concerns" for withholding details. The IRGC had declared the base a legitimate target in July.

Week ahead: midterm stretch begins.

Six weeks to Election Day. Iran, gas prices, and the Epstein files are the three issues most likely to move the needle. The contempt hearing date for Blanche will be announced. The Nor'easter clears Tuesday. NFL Week 4 Sunday.
