The White House asked the Pentagon for strike options against Iran before the November 3 elections. CENTCOM was ordered days ago to be ready to resume major combat operations. Brent is above $104\. Hurricane Isaias is shutting down a quarter of Gulf oil production. And the Fed minutes showed most officials want one more rate hike before year end.

Thursday. Two separate reports — The Atlantic and Axios, each citing administration officials — say the White House has asked the Pentagon for pre-election strike options against Iran, with CENTCOM ordered to be ready for major operations "within weeks." Oil is above $104 on the combination of strike planning news and Hurricane Isaias shutting down 25% of Gulf production. The Fed wants to hike again. Markets are falling for the second straight day. Here's everything.

Most retirees take their [Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)](https://db.clkrova.com/6ab253d1147d8ecbd736e659?email=%%{uuid}%%&domain=636DBG&type=BLOG&product=PALRT602&ref=dark-bulls.ghost.io) the default way. In cash. And that's where the problem starts.

Because taking RMDs the wrong way can mean:

▸ More taxes for Washington
▸ Less compounding for you
▸ A smaller legacy for your family

What most retirees don't realize is that [IRS Code 408(m) allows RMDs](https://db.clkrova.com/6ab253d1147d8ecbd736e659?email=%%{uuid}%%&domain=636DBG&type=BLOG&product=PALRT602&ref=dark-bulls.ghost.io) to be handled differently — in a way that may help protect more of what you've earned. But timing matters. Once the distribution hits your account, options shrink fast.

We created a free guide explaining:

The White House asked the Pentagon for strike options against Iran before Election Day — and CENTCOM was ordered days ago to complete planning for a resumption of major combat operations "within weeks."

October 8, 2026 · War / Politics

The Atlantic, citing two sources inside the administration, reported Wednesday that the White House has requested military strike options against Iran timed to the period before the November 3 midterm elections. The planning is described as connected to the president's desire to demonstrate progress in the war — and specifically to the belief that visible military action could contribute to lower fuel prices before Election Day. Axios followed with a report that U.S. Central Command was ordered several days ago to complete its readiness planning for resuming large-scale combat operations. NBC News independently confirmed that senior officials have been discussing major operations "in the coming weeks."

The logic offered by administration officials favoring limited strikes is that targeted action against Iranian energy infrastructure could demonstrate battlefield momentum before November 3\. The problem, as officials who oppose the pre-election timeline have pointed out, is that strikes would almost certainly not reopen Hormuz in time to lower gas prices before Election Day. A closed strait keeps oil prices elevated; strikes that don't immediately force Hormuz open could push Brent even higher in the short run by increasing the perceived risk of Iranian retaliation against Gulf shipping. The political math does not obviously favor a pre-election strike.

"

The chances of a strike before the election are not high, but we're not ruling it out. After the election, they are significantly higher.

The reporting arrives on the one-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel. The president spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu Tuesday in what the Israeli side described as their second conversation in several days, part of which covered the possibility of resuming major combat operations. The White House said only that the leaders discussed "the memory of the victims of October 7." Secretary of State Rubio, speaking in Iceland, said Iran had "missed its chances" for a negotiated deal. Iran's parliament speaker continued to demand that the U.S. meet all seven conditions before Hormuz reopens.

For American households, the pre-election strike scenario has a specific and immediate economic implication: if strikes happen before November 3 and Iran retaliates by fully closing Hormuz or attacking Gulf infrastructure, Brent could spike well above $110 within days. The administration's internal debate, as described by sources to both outlets, is essentially a debate about which risk is larger. Oil is already pricing the uncertainty: Brent is above $104 Thursday morning.

Hurricane Isaias heads for Mobile Bay — 25% of Gulf oil production shut in, six refineries at risk

The Atlantic season's first hurricane is expected to make landfall near Mobile, Alabama late Friday or early Saturday as a Category 2, bringing dangerous storm surge and heavy rain from Louisiana to Florida. As of Wednesday, 25% of Gulf oil production and 16% of natural gas output have been shut in. Chevron closed four offshore facilities; Shell is curtailing operations. Six refineries operated by Shell, Valero, Marathon, PBF, and Chevron are in the potential impact zone. S&P Global estimates production losses around 11.2 million barrels for the storm's duration.

Fed minutes: most officials want one more rate hike — markets fall for the second straight day, Brent above $104

The September Fed minutes showed the 12-0 hold was unanimous but that most officials believe another rate increase will be needed if inflation stays elevated. Markets read the minutes as hawkish — S&P 500 fell 0.25% to 7,799 Wednesday; indices are down again Thursday morning. CME FedWatch prices October hold at 78% and December hike at 69%. Bond yields: 10-year at 5.31%, 30-year at 5.68%. Brent crude above $104 on Iran strike reports and Gulf production shutdowns. Gold holds near $4,147; silver falls 2.2% to $58.96.

Rubio: Iran missed its chances for a deal — the president said at a San Antonio rally he's no longer interested in an agreement

Secretary of State Rubio, speaking in Reykjavik, declared Iran had "missed its chances" for a negotiated resolution and called on Moscow to be transparent about the Siberian situation. The president told a San Antonio crowd that a deal with Iran no longer interests him. Iran's parliament speaker maintained that all seven conditions must be met before Hormuz reopens. Attacks on vessels in the strait and the broader Gulf continued to accelerate, per Reuters tracking — a direct contributor to Thursday's oil spike.

The president said a call with Putin was planned for his birthday — the Kremlin denied it, and whether it happened remains unconfirmed

The president said in the Oval Office that a call with Putin was planned for his 74th birthday (October 7) and that Russia says the Siberian situation is "under control." The Kremlin's spokesman said there were "no substantive arrangements" for a call. Whether the conversation took place was not confirmed as of Thursday morning. The president said the pathogen is "not a bioweapon — we don't think." MIT biologist Kevin Esvelt publicly questioned whether it is standard plague at all, citing the unusual quarantine protocol involved.

About 60 House districts will decide the midterms — the president won them by 9 points in 2024, 26 days to go

NPR analysis identifies roughly 60 competitive House districts where both parties are concentrating spending. The president carried these districts by an average of about 9 percentage points in 2024\. That margin is now being tested against war-era fuel prices, a 29,000-job September, and a Fed that wants to hike rates again. Democrats need a net gain of a handful of seats to flip the House. ICE arrests hit record levels this past summer, with agents now operating in previously off-limits locations including hospitals — a dynamic that could affect turnout in several of these districts.

Ship attacks near Hormuz accelerating — and the SEC is cutting staff while being asked to write new crypto rules

Reuters documented an increase in attacks on commercial vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz — a direct contributor to Thursday's oil price spike and a persistent "war premium" keeping Brent elevated. Separately, NPR reported that the SEC has sharply cut its staff and caseload just as it has been tasked with writing new rules for cryptocurrencies and prediction markets — two of the fastest-growing corners of American retail investing. Police departments across the country are also rolling out large-scale "real-time monitoring centers" that aggregate mass surveillance data, per NPR.
