Inflation came in at 3.7% — hotter than expected, driven by a 9.1% jump in gasoline prices. This is the last CPI report before November 3rd. A missile struck Saudi Aramco's headquarters. The Fed is boxed in. Markets are falling.

Wednesday. The number the White House has been dreading landed this morning: CPI at 3.7%, above the 3.6% forecast, with gas prices up more than 9% in a single month. Bank of America posted a 17% profit drop. Houthis hit Aramco's Dhahran complex with a ballistic missile. Iran says it's deliberately keeping oil prices high to influence the midterms. Twenty days left. Here's everything.

Inflation jumped to 3.7% in September — gas prices soared 9.1% in a single month — and this was the last CPI report Americans will see before they vote on November 3rd.

October 14, 2026 · Economy / Elections

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday morning that the Consumer Price Index rose 0.6% in September — exactly as projected on a monthly basis — but the year-over-year figure came in at 3.7%, above the 3.6% consensus forecast and up from 3.4% in August. Core CPI, which strips out food and energy, also disappointed: +0.3% for the month and +2.6% annually versus expectations of 0.2% and 2.5%. The miss was not catastrophic. But it was a miss, and the timing is everything.

The single biggest driver was energy — and within energy, gasoline. Gas prices jumped 9.1% in September alone, accounting for more than half of the total monthly CPI increase. Energy overall surged 5.2% for the month and is now up 20.4% year-over-year. Shelter costs rose 0.4%. Food at home declined 0.1%. For the average American household spending $300 or more per month on fuel and groceries, the lived experience of this report is not a number on a screen — it is the station pump, the checkout line, the heating bill arriving as temperatures drop.

"

This is the last inflation report before the election. There will not be another one. Whatever voters feel at the pump on November 3rd is baked in.

But the crates themselves aren't the real story. They reveal Elon's favorite playbook: **Build the infrastructure quietly. Let everyone else notice when it's already too late.** Now, a newly filed patent suggests he may be repeating that exact playbook with artificial intelligence. The breakthrough is being called **"M.A.G.I."** And while the public remains distracted by Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI… One little-known supplier could be quietly positioning itself at the center of Elon's next potential empire. The political ramifications are immediate and severe. This is the final CPI reading before Election Day. There will be no October surprise from the Bureau of Labor Statistics — this number is the number voters carry into the booth. The University of Michigan's October consumer survey, released Tuesday, already showed one-year inflation expectations jumping to 4.7% — the highest in five months. Today's data validates those fears rather than calming them.

The Federal Reserve meets October 27–28 — just six days before the election. Economists universally expect the Fed to hold rates at that meeting; moving rates days before a vote would be seen as political regardless of direction. The real decision comes December 17–18\. Before today's print, markets had priced a roughly 50-50 chance of a December hike. That probability has now shifted toward 60-65% in favor of another increase. The 10-year Treasury yield moved above 5.4% Wednesday morning on the data. Growth stocks sold off for the third consecutive session.

Add to this the overnight news that a Houthi ballistic missile struck Saudi Aramco's headquarters complex in Dhahran, causing what Saudi officials called a "limited fire" but what Reuters sources described as more extensive damage — and you have a market facing simultaneous pressure from domestic inflation data and Middle East energy risk. Brent crude moved above $107 Wednesday morning. For the White House, the gas price story is the inflation story, and the inflation story is the election story. Twenty days left.

Houthi missile hits Saudi Aramco HQ in Dhahran — Brent jumps above $107

A ballistic missile struck Aramco's Dhahran complex Tuesday evening, causing what the Saudi Energy Ministry described as a "limited fire." Three Reuters sources said the damage was more extensive, with fire spreading across several floors and employees shifted to remote work; four were injured by debris. The strike was in retaliation for a coalition attack on a Houthi oil site in Sanaa. Aramco said production and exports were unaffected. Oil is pricing in the risk regardless.

Iran says it changed tactics against shipping to keep oil prices high — and influence U.S. midterms

Iranian officials told Reuters they shifted their offensive maritime approach roughly ten days ago with the explicit goal of maintaining elevated oil prices through Election Day. Details of the new tactics were withheld. Separately, IRGC commander Ali Ozmaei declared Iran is "counting the moments" until it can strike American warships, warning the U.S. not to assume Hormuz is open. The combination of explicit election interference claims and escalating military rhetoric marks a new phase of Iranian messaging.

BofA's quarterly profit dropped 17% to $6.9B after a $1.2 billion regulatory penalty; stripped of the fine it earned $8.1B — up 4% year-over-year — but shares fell more than 3% in premarket trading. BlackRock beat estimates handily at $15.93 per share versus $14.30 expected, with $7.75B in revenue. Morgan Stanley also reported today. Bank earnings season opened Tuesday with Goldman posting a record beat and JPMorgan posting a rare miss — the split continues.

Markets erase gains after CPI — Fed pause expected Oct 27, December hike odds rising

Dow futures were up 0.33% before the CPI release; those gains were wiped out immediately after. Tech stocks fell for a third straight session; semiconductor funds headed for a fifth down day. The 10-year yield crossed 5.4%. The Fed meets October 27–28 — economists are unanimous it will hold before the election. December is a different story: hike probability has moved from roughly 50% to 60–65% on today's data. Michigan consumer inflation expectations hit a five-month high at 4.7% one-year out.

ASML: AI chip demand so strong we can't fill it for two years — shares jump 3.6%

The Dutch semiconductor equipment giant raised its 2026 sales forecast citing relentless AI-driven demand, but warned it will not be able to fully satisfy customer orders for at least two years. The news sent ASML shares up 3.6% — a rare green spot in an otherwise red technology session. The company makes the extreme ultraviolet lithography machines without which the world's most advanced chips cannot be produced; its order backlog is effectively a leading indicator for the entire AI semiconductor build-out.

Supreme Court takes DOGE records case — White House wants watchdog blocked from internal documents

The Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to hear the administration's bid to prevent a government watchdog from obtaining records about the Department of Government Efficiency's layoff decisions and funding cancellations. The court has not yet ruled on the merits — it accepted the case and will hear arguments later. Lower courts had sided with the watchdog's access request. The case could set a significant precedent for executive branch transparency over a department that has already eliminated tens of thousands of federal positions.
