The president announced $90 checks for 20.8 million Medicare recipients — coming in the next few weeks, 29 days before the midterms. Iran is studying the latest U.S. proposals but the strait stays closed. Nasdaq closed at a record. And the G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels to fight oil prices.

Tuesday. The week's first big story is a direct payment to the largest single voting bloc in America — seniors on Medicare — announced Friday night on Truth Social with 29 days to go before Election Day. The money comes from a Bush-era fund the White House says has never been used. Whether it arrives before November 3 is the question. Meanwhile Iran and the U.S. are still talking through Qatar, Nasdaq is at an all-time high, and the G7 is flooding the market with oil. Here's everything.

The president announced $90 checks for 20.8 million Medicare recipients — drawn from a $2 billion Bush-era fund the White House says has never been used — arriving in the next few weeks, 29 days before the midterms.

October 6, 2026 · Finance / Health

The president posted the announcement late Friday night on Truth Social. CMS confirmed Saturday that 20.8 million Medicare recipients will receive $90 direct payments funded by the Medicare Improvement Fund — a $2 billion reserve created during the Bush administration in 2008\. The White House described the fund as a "pointless slush fund" that has "never once been used," making it available to redirect into direct payments. Most recipients will receive direct bank transfers; those without direct deposit will receive paper checks. The administration said the payments will begin arriving in the "next few weeks."

The political context is impossible to separate from the announcement. Election Day is November 3 — 29 days away. Medicare recipients skew heavily toward the 65-and-older demographic that votes in the highest numbers of any age group in America. A $90 payment arriving in October, two to four weeks before an election, is a direct financial contact with the single most reliable voting bloc in the country. The Washington Post reported that Republican congressional staffers said lawmakers had planned to use the Medicare Improvement Fund for other programs and were caught off guard by the announcement.

"

This is a pointless slush fund that has never once been used. We are sending that money directly to the seniors it was meant for.

The payment follows a pattern. The president had previously promised "DOGE dividends" — direct payments from government efficiency savings — and $2,000 tariff-funded checks. Neither materialized. The Medicare fund payments are different in one key respect: the money exists, is already appropriated, and CMS has confirmed it will be distributed. Whether the payments physically arrive before November 3 depends on banking processing times for direct deposits and postal service timing for paper checks. The administration is not guaranteeing pre-election delivery — it is saying "next few weeks."

Separately, the administration confirmed that nearly one million Americans in 30 states who overpaid for Affordable Care Act coverage through the exchanges are beginning to receive $500 checks — a separate program from the Medicare payments. Two sets of direct payments to two different groups of Americans, both announced in the same week, both arriving before the election. The administration is also floating "Trump accounts" — investment accounts as a supplement to Social Security — as the next policy announcement. Treasury Secretary Bessent promoted the idea Tuesday morning.

For seniors specifically, the $90 payment is not life-changing money. But it is real money, arriving in an election month, from a president whose approval among older Americans on economic issues has been under pressure from war-era fuel prices and grocery inflation. The political calculation is straightforward: a direct deposit from the federal government into a senior's bank account two weeks before an election creates a moment of tangible positive contact between the administration and its most reliable voters. Whether it moves votes is a separate question. Whether it was designed to is not.

Bessent promotes "Trump accounts" as a supplement to Social Security — investment accounts for every American

Treasury Secretary Bessent outlined a proposal for government-sponsored investment accounts that would sit alongside Social Security rather than replace it. No legislative vehicle, no funding mechanism, and no timeline have been detailed. The proposal follows the Medicare checks and ACA payments — the third financial announcement in a week aimed at older and middle-income Americans ahead of the midterms. Details remain vague enough that it functions more as a campaign message than a policy.
