South Korea triggered automatic circuit breakers as KOSPI collapsed 7.6% — Samsung lost nearly 10%, SK Hynix dropped 11%. Japan, Taiwan, and the U.S. chipmaker index all followed. The global AI trade is cracking, and the question now is whether the selloff is a correction or a reckoning.

Thursday. Seoul's stock exchange halted trading on both KOSPI and KOSDAQ as the AI-driven selloff turned into a rout — foreigners pulled $2.7 billion in a single session. The Nikkei lost 4.5%. Nasdaq futures are pointing lower again. The proximate cause: Wednesday's hot CPI has markets pricing in another Fed rate hike, and investors are finally asking whether AI data center spending will ever pay for itself. Today PPI prints at 8:30\. Here's what you need to know.

THE A.I. MONEY PROBLEM BY THE NUMBERS **4 Numbers That Show Why A.I. Could Break the Budget** Number 2 is the one nobody in Washington wants to talk about.

Governments around the world spend more than they collect. They have for decades. Here's what that looks like, and why A.I. may make it much worse.

| **$1.8T** | **The U.S. deficit in fiscal 2025**, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Washington collected about $5.2 trillion and spent about $7.0 trillion. |
| --------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

| **84%** | **Of federal revenue came from individual income and payroll taxes** in fiscal 2025, per the CBO. In other words, from paychecks. The same paychecks A.I. is built to replace. |
| ------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

| **$1T+** | **Spent on interest on the national debt** in fiscal 2025, according to the CBO. Money that buys nothing except time. |
| -------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

| **100%** | **Global public debt as a share of world GDP by 2029**, as projected by the IMF, up from nearly 94% in 2025\. This isn't just an American problem. |
| -------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Since 1971, when the dollar's link to gold ended, shortfalls like these have been covered with new debt and new money. That pushes prices up, which pushes wages up, which pushes costs up again.

A.I. promises to break that loop by removing the worker. **But workers are who pay the bills.** If paychecks shrink, the gap may grow, and history suggests how it tends to get filled.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

• Governments already spend more than they collect.
• Their revenue depends mostly on people earning and spending.
• A.I. could shrink that base while the bills keep growing.
• Central banks bought 863 tonnes of gold in 2025, according to the World Gold Council.

South Korea halted trading as AI stocks collapsed worldwide — KOSPI fell 7.6%, Samsung lost 9.5%, and $2.7 billion fled the market in a single day. The AI boom is now facing its first serious reckoning.

October 15, 2026 · Markets / Technology

The trigger came from Washington, but the damage spread to Seoul, Tokyo, and every chipmaker on the planet. Wednesday's CPI report — showing inflation still running at 3.7% — brought back something markets had hoped was over: the real possibility of another Federal Reserve rate hike. Higher rates mean higher borrowing costs for the data centers, chip fabs, and AI infrastructure projects that have consumed hundreds of billions in capital spending over the past two years. The question investors couldn't avoid any longer: will any of it pay off?

In Seoul, the KOSPI fell 7.57% to 5,554 — its seventh consecutive losing session and a cumulative decline of 21% over the streak. The exchange triggered automatic circuit breakers on both KOSPI and KOSDAQ. Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chipmaker, fell 9.5%. SK Hynix, a key supplier to Nvidia, dropped 11.1%. Foreign investors pulled 3.63 trillion won — roughly $2.7 billion — in a single day. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 lost 4.5%, with SoftBank down around 8% and Advantest, which makes chip-testing equipment, off by 11%. The previous session in the U.S., the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 4.3% for its sixth straight decline. Nasdaq dropped 1.88%.

The deeper anxiety is not just about interest rates. Analysts at Mirae Asset noted Thursday that markets are no longer asking how fast AI revenue will grow — they're asking whether the infrastructure spending will ever generate returns commensurate with the investment. The buildout of data centers, power infrastructure, and custom silicon has proceeded at a pace that assumed AI adoption would be faster and more lucrative than it has proven so far. A hotter-than-expected inflation environment, which raises the cost of that capital, has forced the question into the open.

"

The market is no longer reacting to AI service revenue growth. It is reacting to the question of whether the infrastructure investment will ever be recovered.

Most financial advisors love to tell you to diversify. They want you spread across 50 different stocks, hoping for the best.

According to Market Wizard Larry Benedict, [“Diversification is for dummies.”](https://db.clkrova.com/6a031c940b6d0b4f9f62a973?email=%%{uuid}%%&domain=636DBG&type=BLOG&product=PBRTF603&ref=dark-bulls.ghost.io) When you're watching everything, you're watching nothing. Especially now, as President Trump triggers a historic regime change at the Federal Reserve.

Trillions of dollars are about to shift. And instead of scrambling to guess which sectors will win, Larry focuses on just [ONE specific ticker](https://db.clkrova.com/6a031c940b6d0b4f9f62a973?email=%%{uuid}%%&domain=636DBG&type=BLOG&product=PBRTF603&ref=dark-bulls.ghost.io) that sits directly at the heart of Fed policy.

This exact ticker previously helped his readers capture massive double and triple-digit gains during market shocks.

Today, he's giving the name of this ticker away completely free. No guesswork. No complicated charts. Just one symbol you can trade right from your phone in under 60 seconds.

The selloff is also being felt in the broader market. The S&P 500 fell 1.11% Wednesday to 7,718 and the VIX volatility index jumped more than 10% to 16.87\. Thursday morning futures are mixed to negative: Dow +0.29%, S&P −0.30%, Nasdaq-100 −1.13%. The energy sector, by contrast, is among the week's best performers — oil and gas stocks have added roughly 5–6% over seven sessions as Brent holds near $104 and WTI around $94\. The divergence tells the story: capital is moving away from speculative AI infrastructure and toward hard assets that produce cash today.

Today's session will be shaped by two things: the PPI report at 8:30, which is expected to show producer prices rising 0.5% in September, and earnings from Charles Schwab, U.S. Bancorp, and several regional banks. If PPI comes in above expectations — as CPI did yesterday — rate-hike odds for December will rise further, and the pressure on tech will intensify. If it surprises to the downside, markets may find a temporary floor. Either way, the AI trade that dominated the past two years is undergoing a recalibration it hasn't faced before.

Trump says leakers "should be shot," points at press at Arizona rally

At a Bullhead City rally, Trump said "in the old days we shot leakers" and gestured toward the media pen, saying reporters are "almost as bad." He claimed a published report about bomber departure times forced a delay in the Iran strike — though by his own account the strike happened two days later at the same time. No charges have been filed against any leaker.

A new Houthi attack on the Saudi capital followed Wednesday's strike on the Saudi Aramco headquarters in Dhahran.
