Brent oil crossed $98, gas hit a Labor Day record. Germany's far-right just doubled its vote share and Merz called it "the most serious CDU defeat for decades." Iran announced a new restricted zone in the Persian Gulf. The NTSB revealed who died in Miami. And Alcaraz faces Shelton tonight.

A Tuesday that starts with oil near $100, a political earthquake in Germany, and Iran escalating again in the Gulf. The NTSB held its first briefing on the Miami airport crash — all five victims were in vehicles on the ground, and investigators are focused on why the pilots didn't abort the landing. Tonight's Alcaraz-Shelton match at Arthur Ashe is the quarterfinal the tournament has been building toward. Let's get into it.

Imagine opening your retirement statement this year… And realizing that a simple decision — one most retirees never even think about — could reshape your taxes, your diversification, and even your long-term financial stability. Every year, Americans over age 73 are forced to withdraw tens of billions of dollars from their retirement accounts. And year after year, most people follow the same path: Take the RMD in cash and move on. Not because it's the best choice. But because no one ever tells them there's another way. [The "Default" RMD Isn't Your Only Option.](https://db.clkrova.com/69cfa213e9f7fa16b640790a?email=%%{uuid}%%&domain=636DBG&type=BLOG&product=PALRT2&ref=dark-bulls.ghost.io) Taking your RMD in cash may:

· Increase taxable income · Force you to sell assets at moments that may not align with your plan · Reduce the overall portion of your wealth that remains invested

Meaning: instead of withdrawing cash, you can receive certain assets directly without liquidating them first. It's fully IRS-allowed… but rarely mentioned in traditional planning conversations. We've created a clear, simple breakdown of: cash vs. in-kind RMDs, how each method works, questions to ask before choosing, and what to discuss with your advisor. Brent crude just crossed $98 — and the CPI report Thursday morning will determine whether the Fed hikes in nine days.

Brent crude added 1.5% to $98.48 a barrel Monday — its highest level in about six weeks — as tensions simmered in the six-month U.S. war with Iran. AAA reports that regular unleaded set a Labor Day record at $4.15 a gallon, with diesel hitting $5.90, an all-time high. The proximate cause is the same thing it's been all summer: the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's announcement of a new restricted zone, its weekend missile strikes on U.S. Navy ships, and the American response that destroyed three Iranian tankers have collectively put a floor under oil prices that wasn't there a month ago. Brent was trading around $65-70 before the war began in late February. It spiked to $119 in March when the strait first closed. It fell back as the U.S. Navy cleared mines and established corridor shipping. Now it's climbing again as Iran reasserts its ability to disrupt that corridor. Every dollar per barrel of Brent translates roughly to about 2.5 cents per gallon at the pump over time. The move from $65 to $98 has contributed meaningfully to the $4.15 national average.

"Higher oil prices feed directly into CPI — energy is a significant component. If CPI comes in hot Thursday, Warsh has both the inflation mandate and the political cover to hike on September 16." — Dark Bulls

September rate hike odds are above 65% following the blowout 162,000 jobs report Friday. Higher oil prices feed directly into CPI — energy is a significant component of the index. If CPI comes in hot Thursday, driven partly by energy, Warsh has both the inflation mandate and the political cover to hike on September 16\. If oil keeps climbing toward $100 before the FOMC meeting, that dynamic intensifies further. For Americans filling their tanks this week, the practical reality is a national average that has risen more than 30% from a year ago. The September 11 CPI report will show whether that energy price pressure is spreading into core inflation — the measure the Fed watches most carefully. That's the number Thursday morning that will actually move markets.

Germany's far-right just doubled its vote share in a state election — and Chancellor Merz called it "the most serious defeat the CDU has had for decades."

The Alternative for Germany party won the election in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, taking 43.8% of the vote. The CDU came in a distant second with 17.2%. Compared with the 2021 state election, the AfD more than doubled its vote share while the CDU's share was halved. In Saxony-Anhalt, 87% of voters told exit pollsters they were dissatisfied with the federal government. Speaking in Berlin on Monday, Merz said he saw a society "longing for disruption" and "fundamental change." "Yesterday's result has changed not only Saxony-Anhalt, but Germany as a whole," he said. "We are all profoundly shocked. We did not expect it to turn out like this." The AfD's lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund called it a historic result and said he intends to attempt to form a government — a step that would represent the first far-right state government in Germany since the Nazi era.

"This is the hardest defeat that the CDU has had for decades. Of course, this is going to have consequences." — Friedrich Merz, Berlin, September 7, 2026 — German Chancellor

The AfD falls three seats short of a majority in the 83-seat legislature and faces no obvious coalition partner — all established parties have vowed not to work with the AfD. Saxony-Anhalt's AfD branch has been classified as a confirmed right-wing extremist organisation by Germany's domestic intelligence agency, a designation the party rejects as politically motivated. The AfD's victory is a major distraction for Germany and Merz at a time when Europe faces Russia's continued aggression, a suspected sabotage campaign targeting NATO countries, and difficult dealings with U.S. President Donald Trump. For Americans watching European politics, what happened in Saxony-Anhalt matters beyond the German border. The AfD's platform includes ending Germany's constitutional right to asylum and taking a considerably softer line toward Russia. A party that once polled at 20% nationally is now routinely topping 43% in eastern states. Merz has ruled out cooperation at any level — but governing without it in Saxony-Anhalt, where it controls nearly half the legislature, will be extraordinarily difficult.

Tim Plaehn here. CrowdStrike… Palantir... Nvidia… Some of the most powerful companies on the planet and not one of them pays a real dividend. So while everyone around me was piling into the AI trade, chasing gains and holding their breath… I sat it out. Until I found something that changed everything… A single fund that owns all the biggest names in AI and pays out income every single Thursday. Up to $1,051 a month. What I found is the most compelling income opportunity I've seen in two decades of doing this. I reveal the full story in a free video presentation — including the real Thursday's distribution history, how the fund actually generates this income, and how to buy it in any brokerage account. Iran has announced a new "restricted zone" extending deep into the Persian Gulf — any ship entering without Tehran's permission goes on a sanctions list.

Iran has announced plans to establish a new restricted zone in the Gulf in the coming days, saying it will also publish maps for a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei said the zone would extend from "the line where the U.S. naval blockade begins to the Strait of Hormuz region and inside the Persian Gulf on the other side." Ships that enter the zone without coordination with Iran would face sanctions affecting their insurance coverage and future passage through the waterway. Iran has been trying to reassert control and dispute the growing narrative that American forces now control the vital waterway more than Tehran does. The U.S. military announced in August that most of Iran's sea mines had been removed and millions of barrels of oil were moving under U.S. Navy protection — with traffic returning to roughly half or two-thirds of pre-war levels. The new restricted zone is Iran's direct challenge to that narrative.

"We will only commit to the Strait of Hormuz being open when they stop the sabotage, threats, and attacks on Iran." — Mohsen Rezaei, Iran's Supreme National Security Council — Iran's top security official

The latest developments come after the U.S. struck three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for ballistic missile attacks on U.S. Navy warships. Iran has vowed that its response will be "faster, heavier and more painful" as both sides continue trading blows. Iran has expanded its blacklist by 11 vessels, bringing the total to 56, including crude-oil tankers, LNG and LPG carriers, and clean-product ships. The practical implication of the new zone, if enforced, is that shipping companies face a binary choice: coordinate with Iranian maritime authorities — accepting Tehran's jurisdiction over internationally recognized open water — or face Iranian sanctions that make it nearly impossible to obtain insurance or future transit permissions. The zone has not yet been formally published with precise coordinates. When it is, that map will determine exactly how much of the Gulf's shipping infrastructure falls inside it.

The NTSB revealed who died at Miami airport — all five were in vehicles on the ground — and investigators are focused on why the pilots didn't abort the landing.

The five people killed Sunday when an Amazon-branded cargo plane overran a runway in Miami International Airport were traveling in a van transporting an aircraft cleaning crew and in an SUV driving outside the airport, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said Monday during a news conference. The white Ford van was owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., a contract cleaning company for airline companies, which was inside the airport. All five victims were in the two vehicles that were struck. The two pilots survived. The investigation is already raising questions about the crew's decision to continue the landing and whether a go-around should have been attempted. Video of Sunday's landing appears to show the Boeing 767 remaining airborne well down the runway before touching down. Aviation experts said investigators will seek to determine exactly where the plane landed, whether it was beyond the normal touchdown zone, and why the pilots did not abandon the landing. The NTSB recovered both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, which were sent to NTSB headquarters for analysis.

"This is an Amazon operation for transporting cargo, but it's actually contracted to 21 Air. We're going to want to see what that relationship is, who does what, what safety provisions might be in any contracts." — NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy — NTSB Monday briefing

The plane was manufactured in 1994\. Homendy said the age and ownership history of the aircraft would be examined as part of the investigation. Investigators will also examine the contractual relationship between 21 Air and Amazon Prime Air, including the operational responsibilities and who was responsible for what. The NTSB will also consider whether an Engineered Materials Arresting System — a bed of crushable concrete at the runway end designed to stop overrunning aircraft — should have been installed at the runway in question. Homendy addressed the broader pattern of runway excursions, noting the NTSB has investigated more than 3,000 such incidents since 2008\. For the families of the five people killed — workers on their way to or from a cleaning job, and a driver in an SUV on a road adjacent to the airport — the investigation will take months. The NTSB team of 32 investigators expects to be on the ground in Miami for at least a week.

Alcaraz versus Shelton tonight at Arthur Ashe Stadium — and Shelton said it himself: "I think it's gonna be fireworks."

All eyes are on Shelton tonight as he faces his biggest test in a tantalizing quarterfinal blockbuster against reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz. Many circled the potential showdown when the draw came out and, despite several stunning upsets of top players in the men's draw, their collision course has remained intact. Just moments after his win over Tsitsipas, Shelton was asked on court what it would take to beat Alcaraz. He didn't hesitate. "Special tennis," he said. "I think the level he's been playing at is really, really impressive. To be not playing for five months and come out and do what he's done so far this tournament has been superhuman." The head-to-head history favors Alcaraz. Their most recent meeting was the fourth round at the French Open in 2025, where Shelton had three set points in the first-set tiebreak but Alcaraz kept finding a way to respond, eventually winning 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4\. But Flushing Meadows is Shelton's best surface, his home crowd, and he arrived at the quarterfinal in better form than anyone expected — demolishing Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round without ever looking troubled.

"I think it's gonna be fireworks on Tuesday night. I hope you guys come back, because I'm ready to go." — Ben Shelton, post-match at Flushing Meadows — US Open quarterfinal preview

Also in the quarterfinals, Frances Tiafoe defeated Daniil Medvedev 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6) in one of the weekend's best matches — a result that, combined with Shelton's and Alex Michelsen's advances, puts three Americans in the men's quarterfinals simultaneously. The last time that happened at the US Open was 2005\. On the women's side, Sabalenka and Pegula are both through, setting up the possibility of an all-American women's semifinal. Tonight's Alcaraz-Shelton match is the quarterfinal the tournament has been building toward all week. On paper, Alcaraz is the better player. On this court, on this night, Shelton has the crowd. That has counted for something at Flushing Meadows before. It may count for something tonight.

📋 In Brief

CPI Thursday at 8:30 a.m. ET. The August Consumer Price Index drops Thursday morning — the last major inflation data point before the September 15-16 FOMC meeting. On September 10, the government will also release the August Producer Price Index, providing data on prices for businesses before they pass costs to consumers. September rate hike odds are above 65%. Thursday's number will either lock in that hike or give Warsh a reason to pause. Miami airport update. Two of MIA's four runways have been reopened and the ground stop was lifted, but impacts for travelers are likely to continue for another day or two. The NTSB team of 32 investigators remains on site and will release additional findings Tuesday — possibly including confirmed speed data from the flight data recorder. Tiafoe vs. Zverev Wednesday. The men's quarterfinal slate continues Wednesday with Tiafoe facing top seed Alexander Zverev — a matchup between the American crowd favorite and the tournament's highest remaining seed. Zverev barely survived his second-round five-setter against Sonego; Tiafoe is playing some of the best tennis of his career this fortnight.
