The U.S. just destroyed five more Iranian tankers — and oil is now within striking distance of $100 heading into Thursday's CPI.

CENTCOM announced Tuesday that U.S. forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers on September 8 after the IRGC targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the previous two days. The warship successfully evaded both attacks. No American personnel were harmed. Four tankers — M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, and M/T Riesco — were struck in the Gulf of Oman. A fifth, M/T Derya, was hit near Kharg Island, Iran's primary crude oil export terminal. CENTCOM published video footage of the M/T Riesco sinking. Iran retaliated Wednesday morning. The IRGC fired ballistic missiles at the Al Azraq military base in Jordan used by U.S. forces. Jordan said its air defense systems intercepted 18 of the 20 missiles; two fell in unpopulated areas. No American casualties were reported. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Navy also warned crews of oil tankers near ports in Kuwait and Bahrain to immediately leave their vessels. The IRGC claimed it struck two American vessels and eight oil tankers in the Gulf — claims U.S. and regional forces disputed.

"If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost — taking out three of yours." — CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper. Tuesday's response followed the same logic at higher scale: five tankers for two missile attacks. — U.S. Central Command

The score over the past week: U.S. forces have destroyed 10 Iranian tankers in total. Iran has fired ballistic missiles at American warships, a carrier strike group, and a base in Jordan — with every attack either evaded or intercepted. Brent crude closed Tuesday at $98.48 and was trading above $99 in Asian markets Wednesday morning. The $100 threshold is psychologically significant and practically meaningful — it's the level at which energy becomes an unmissable driver of consumer inflation. Thursday's CPI report at 8:30 a.m. ET is now the most consequential economic data point to drop before a Federal Reserve decision in years. September rate hike odds sit above 65%. If CPI prints at or above 3.7% — the PCE level from last month — the Fed has every justification it needs to hike on September 16\. The oil war in the Gulf and the rate decision in Washington are now directly connected.

New Hampshire just picked its Senate nominees — and set up one of November's most closely watched races.

Voters went to the polls in New Hampshire on Tuesday in the first major primary night of the 2026 midterm season. On the Republican side, former Senator John Sununu defeated former Senator Scott Brown and three other candidates to win the GOP nomination for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democratic incumbent Jeanne Shaheen. President Trump had endorsed Sununu in February — a notable choice given that Sununu called Trump a "loser" in 2024\. On the Democratic side, Representative Chris Pappas defeated democratic socialist challenger Karishma Manzur, a research scientist with a doctorate in biochemistry who had been rising in polls in the final weeks of the campaign. Shaheen backed Pappas. The general election match-up — Sununu versus Pappas on November 3 — is one of the most competitive Senate races in the country. New Hampshire is a genuine swing state that has elected both Republicans and Democrats to statewide office in recent cycles. The seat carries particular weight because Senate control is on the line. Democrats currently hold the Senate 51-49\. Republicans need a net gain of two seats to flip the chamber, and New Hampshire is on every list of seats in play.

"Are you living in Trump's golden age?" — Rep. Chris Pappas, to supporters after winning the Democratic Senate primary. Sununu won the Republican primary on Trump's endorsement despite calling him a "loser" in 2024. — New Hampshire primary night

Sununu served in the Senate from 2003 to 2009 and has a family political brand in New Hampshire that stretches back decades. His moderate-leaning profile gives him a structural advantage in the general election that a more ideologically rigid candidate might not have had. Whether Trump's midterm support helps or hurts Sununu in a state that has trended away from MAGA candidates in recent cycles is the central question between now and November 3\. Also in New Hampshire, Anthony DiLorenzo won the Republican nomination and Stefany Shaheen — the retiring senator's daughter — narrowly won the Democratic nomination in the 1st Congressional District.

At 4:12 AM Eastern, a single regulatory wire hit the public disclosure servers. By the time regular trading opened at 9:30 AM, shareholders woke up to an instant 79% jump. No day trading was required. No technical charts to monitor. This overnight repricing happens when cash-heavy mining giants quietly buy out small gold operators while the market sleeps. With the top four gold majors hoarding $18 billion in free cash flow, they have no choice but to go on a buyout spree. Their own production is shrinking every quarter, forcing them to pay 67% to 79% premiums for top-tier junior assets. Eleven European countries and Canada announced trade restrictions on Israeli settlements — the largest coordinated Western action against Israeli policy since the Gaza war began.

France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden announced plans Tuesday to introduce national restrictions on trade in goods with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank that are illegal under international law. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced the coordinated move in Paris. The countries said they were acting in response to continued Israeli settlement expansion and what they described as a failure of diplomatic pressure to produce results. The European Union as a body has not taken the same step, but the announcement represents the largest bloc of Western nations to simultaneously impose trade restrictions on Israeli settlement goods since the conflict began. The announcement comes as a separate Haaretz report revealed that UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed directly warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ten days before the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that Hamas was planning a major offensive. Netanyahu reportedly "reacted with relative calm" and assured bin Zayed that Israel was prepared. Netanyahu's office denied the account Tuesday, saying Netanyahu did not speak with the UAE president during the period in question.

"Today, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Sweden confirm their intention to impose national restrictions on trade in goods with settlements." — French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot — Paris, September 8, 2026

For the United States, the coordinated European move creates a diplomatic complication. The Trump administration has opposed international pressure campaigns against Israel and has not supported trade restrictions on settlement goods. The European action is explicitly multilateral and does not require U.S. participation — but it puts Washington in the position of diverging from its closest allies on a visible and politically charged issue. Israel condemned the announcements as "anti-Israel discrimination" and summoned the ambassadors of France and the UK for formal protests.

Ben Shelton beat Carlos Alcaraz at 3:33 a.m. — the latest finish in US Open history, and the biggest win of his career.

It started just after 11 p.m. ET on Tuesday, after the first three quarterfinal matches all went the distance and pushed the night session back further than anyone planned. What unfolded over the next four hours and 28 minutes was the best tennis match of the tournament, played in front of a crowd that refused to leave Arthur Ashe Stadium even as the clock crossed midnight, then 1 a.m., then 2 a.m., then 3\. Ben Shelton defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7) — becoming the first player ever to beat Alcaraz in four attempts and punching his ticket to his third career Grand Slam semifinal. The match turned on three moments. Shelton's second set, won 6-1 after dropping the first. The fourth set, taken by Alcaraz 6-1 with ruthless efficiency to force a fifth. And the super tiebreak, played at 3 a.m. in front of 23,000 people who had absolutely no intention of going home. Shelton went up 8-7, held serve with a 146 mph ace, then closed the match with another 146 mph ace at 3:33 a.m. — the latest finish in tournament history. "It's always about the people in the crowd," Shelton said on court afterward.

Earlier, Frances Tiafoe staged one of the tournament's great comebacks — recovering from two sets down to defeat Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(6) in four hours and 39 minutes. Tiafoe versus Shelton in the semifinal guarantees that an American man will compete in the US Open final on Sunday — the first time an American man has reached the US Open final since Andy Roddick in 2006. The 23-year drought since an American man won a Grand Slam title — Roddick, US Open 2003 — ends this Sunday if either Shelton or Tiafoe wins. On the women's side, Jessica Pegula defeated Emma Navarro 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the semifinals. Sabalenka is also through. The possibility of an all-American women's final is alive.

A law enforcement operation rescued nearly 80 missing children across 13 states — the largest federal child rescue operation of 2026.

The FBI and Department of Justice announced Tuesday evening the completion of a multi-week operation that located and rescued 79 missing children across 13 states, making it the most significant child rescue operation conducted by federal law enforcement since the FBI's Operation Iron Pursuit in April 2026\. The children ranged in age from several months to 17 years old. Several were recovered from situations involving suspected human trafficking; others had been located through leads connecting them to known offenders with prior records of exploitation. The DOJ said charges are pending against 23 individuals, with additional arrests expected. The operation was coordinated out of the FBI's Crimes Against Children unit and ran concurrently with local and state law enforcement in 13 states. Officials said the geographic breadth reflected intelligence that trafficking networks in 2026 are increasingly mobile — moving children across state lines to avoid detection by local authorities with jurisdiction in only one state. The FBI said it used digital forensics extensively, including analysis of encrypted messaging platforms and social media accounts used to recruit and move minors.

"Let this be a message to criminal actors who seek to target America's children: you will be pursued, and you will be brought to justice." — FBI Director Kash Patel — FBI statement

President Trump referenced the operation at the White House on Tuesday, calling it "proof that when law enforcement has the resources and authority it needs, it gets results." Attorney General Pam Bondi called for additional funding for the FBI's Crimes Against Children unit in the upcoming appropriations negotiations. The operation is the second major federal child rescue effort this year, following Operation Iron Pursuit in April, which resulted in the arrest of over 350 alleged child exploitation predators and the location of more than 200 child victims across all 56 FBI field offices.
